All devotion is based on esteem. There can be no devotion towards a person unless that person is loved. Consequently if we have little esteem we will have little devotion. Our devotion to Mary must flow from our esteem for her. All love comes from knowledge and greater love from greater knowledge. Therefore when people decry St. Louis-Marie’s consecration to Mary one might well question their esteem of our Blessed Lady.
Do we realize enough that Mary is the Mother of God? The more we know of Mary, the greater will be our love of her. And if we really love her the greater will be the expression of that love. Montfort’s consecration is an expression of great love for Mary. The higher opinion we have of her greatness, the deeper will be the respect and esteem we bear her, and that is the foundation of all true love.
Esteem for Mary will have its practical application in our daily lives. It should lead us to tremendous confidence in Mary, like the confidence of a child in its mother.
