Esteem and love for another should always counteract self-interest. Our devotion to Mary should prompt us to seek God and not ourselves. In following her we cut self-seeking out of our life and that is a sure means of self-denial. Our purpose in loving Mary is to love God more than self. The practice of the True Devotion will bring this about perfectly. The results obtained will be in proportion to the generosity with which one gives to Mary. Many love Our Lady because she is a help in trouble or distress. That means she is loved because of her favors. The test of devotion will be found when she is served and loved in spiritual weariness and, above all, when the sword which pierced her heart pierces our own.
