‘If Mary, who is the tree of life, is well cultivated in our soul by fidelity to the practices of this devotion, she will in due course bear fruit, and her fruit is non other than Jesus Christ.’
It is not just a passive action by which we let Mary do everything. On the contrary it is a very active thing by which we ourselves try to do everything in the spirit of Mary. With her help we seek her perfection in everything. In other words we are actively co-operating with the Mediatrix of all Graces.
We are not seeking Our Lord by ourselves. Instead we are deliberately seeking the help of the Mother of Christ in the lifework of following her Divine Son. Mary is our means to Christ. All this serves to bring about the greater glory of Jesus. As St. Louis-Marie states so precisely: ‘By this devotion, faithfully observed, you will give more glory to Jesus Christ in a month than by any other, however difficult, in many years.’ It is not the difficulty as such that increases our merit. It is the love of God that informs that action. By this devotion we seek to do all out of pure love of Jesus and Mary. We try to bring her love into everything. Consequently every action gains before God.
