All pious souls and those who long for a more perfect life are called to it, ‘predestined’ says Montfort. But let us remember that this free, mature and individual devotion is a ‘Secret’ which only a Chosen Few will fully discover. Quality is worth more than quantity, and therefore all souls who aspire to join this Archconfraternity must, before all, aim at being of those Chosen Few.
God shows us by innumerable examples that for His Work He ever desires ‘the elect’ a ‘chosen few’; Blessed de Montfort calls them ‘the predestined.’
Let all the slaves of Jesus in Mary, then, form these Chosen Few, a devout leaven of holiness in the world. Their number, though counted by several hundreds of thousands scattered throughout the world, is comparatively small compared with the crowd who do not know. But let this little flock, this pusillus grex, be ‘the great squadron of brave and valiant soldiers of Jesus and Mary of both sexes,’ of which Blessed Louis speaks in his Treatise of the True Devotion.
Clearly this does not mean that we have the right to limit the number of really earnest souls who desire to enroll themselves beneath the standard of the Holy Slavery. Blessed Louis, who realizes that very few so advance as to make this devotion their habitual state, would nevertheless not discourage aspiration. He merely states the result of his experience. And at the same time, he urgently exhorts all generous souls to attain to it and to establish themselves in it.
