Mary and God the Son

a). – Mary is first and foremost the Mother of God the Son. This already supposes the greatest intimacy, especially at the time of gestation and childhood. “During the months which separate the Annunciation from the Nativity, Jesus lives literally from the life of His Mother. The blood which flows in His veins, which makes His heart beat, which brings the increase to His little members, this blood has completely passed through the heart of His Mother; this is the purest blood of the Immaculate Virgin. And after having nourished Jesus, it returns to the heart of Mary, where enriched by new nutritive juices, it returns to Jesus. Is there not, in this uninterrupted exchange, in this vital commerce of every instant between the Creator and one of His creatures, a mystery of divine condescension and a mystery no less astonishing of human elevation? Could God do more to honor a creature, and could a creature do more to serve her God?”

b.) – Mary is also justly called the Spouse of the Word. On the one hand, her exquisite holiness and fullness of grace give her right to this title which all holy souls bear as well. On the other hand, because of her virginity, she can, like all virgins consecrated to God, be called the spouse of Christ. To these two reasons, which apply to everyone, but are applied above all to Mary, it is appropriate to add two others to them, particular to this good mother. The Incarnation being like a spiritual marriage between the Word and human nature, represented by Mary, it is the Virgin herself who consented to this union on the day of the Incarnation. It is therefore she who is the spouse of the Word. Finally, Mary deserves this title still because of her association, as the new Eve, to Christ, the new Adam, in the whole work of reparation.

Mary and God the Father

I’m translating an excellent book on dogmatic Mariology. From time to time, I’ll post sections from it. Here’s the first:

a). – Through sanctifying grace Mary is the Daughter of the Father, an adoptive daughter certainly, not a daughter according to nature. But this adoption is so full and so perfect that it closely imitates real filiation. For grace was granted to Mary at the same time as nature at the first moment of conception, and she didn’t need, like other men, to be regenerated. Much more, as grace was due to Christ in fullness, because of His hypostatic union, thus grace was due to Mary in the same way for her divine Maternity, assuming, however her free election to this Maternity. This is why the Fathers often praise her as the beloved daughter, the unique daughter, the only daughter of God. This filiation, however, is related to God the Father only by virtue of an appropriation. In reality, it is referred to the three divine Persons. This is what inspired this song of Dante Alighieri: “Virgin Mother, daughter of thy own son.”

b). – Mary is associated with the Father in the generation of the same Son. The two generations, the eternal and the temporal, end in the same person. In the two generations, the Son is begotten of the substance of the One who generates Him, of the substance of the Father according to the divinity, of the substance of the mother, according to the humanity.

And as the generation of the Word is eternal, it occurs at every moment. And so, at the same moment in which the Virgin conceived Christ in His humanity, the Father also begot Him in His divinity. The generation from the Father, however, does not end in the Son according to the human nature. And the conception of Mary does not end in the Son according to the divine nature. That’s why these two acts remain entirely distinct. The one is always present. The other is past and was very brief.

c). – Because of this same association of the Father and the Virgin in the generation of the same Son, Mary is also sometimes called the Spouse of the Father. This expression is understood very well. But it is a delicate maneuvering, and it is better to refrain from it.

Secret Way of the Enclosed Garden – CL

But God, knowing our needs and wishing that we should make them know to Him, has determined official means for the obtaining of the graces which shall meet them.

By Holy Baptism, He makes us a free gift of the first grace which purifies our souls and makes them just and pleasing in His sight, so that they become His dwelling place.

But there are a number of other graces which will be precious, useful, necessary, in the normal course of our spiritual life.  God has promised us and always grants us grace sufficient for our salvation, but we must ask Him for it; we must ask Him especially for those graces which are indispensable for our growth in perfection and our union with the supreme Holiness.  And the usual means is prayer.

How much more effectual will our supplications be, if we make them through Mary.  And besides, even if we do not actually pray through Mary, it is none the less true that the graces which are distributed to us, have, all the same, passes through this divine and necessary channel.  Supported by the honor and the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin, they are almost infallibly certain to be heard.  It is the teaching of S. Bernard and Blessed de Montfort.  Has not Montfort sung in the quaint phrase of the seventeenth century:

‘Je vas par Jésus à son Père,

                        Et je n’en suis point rebuté;

Je vas à Jésus par sa Mère,

                        Et je n’en suis point rejeté.’

Those are the two steps to be climbed: Jesus Who leads to the Father, by redemption; Mary who leads to Jesus, by intercession.  Begin with Mary as Jesus Himself did; then you will go first to Jesus; and thence, Jesus will take you to His divine Father.

Secret Way of the Enclosed Garden – CXXXVII

A vast field is then open to us in which to exert and develop our zeal.  We must also state, for the encouragement of candidates and enthusiasts, that the strict condition of careful preparation, thorough knowledge, sustained application, in the practice of this interior life, does not lessen the number of adherents of the Holy Slavery.  Every day brings us overwhelming and touching proof of this.  It gives those would be members just what their souls need: the most efficient means of approaching God and of sanctifying themselves.

The conclusion to be drawn from all that has been said and which is of obligation for our conduct and our direction is then this: Let the soul whom God inspires with the thought of consecrating itself to Mary by the Holy Slavery of love, as a means of greater perfection, faithfully follow the call of grace.  Then let it strive to live more and more in Mary that it may gradually climb those steps of which Blessed de Montfort speaks and at last establish itself in this life so as to make it its habitual state.

Secret Way of the Enclosed Garden – CXXVIII

The humble slaves of Jesus in Mary do not dream of such an emancipation, tumultuous, cruel and fatal.  But on a closer inspection, we find that this innate spirit of liberty which since the Fall has joined forces in us with original pride, slumbers in each of us and that very little will suffice to rouse it.

True liberty is found in humility, in the considered, intelligent, willing recognition of the rights of God over us, and at the same time in the strict obligation we are under, in that we depend on Him alone for life and through our baptism, to serve Him, love Him, and accept Him as the only end of all our natural and supernatural aspirations.

The true Christian who serves God in all simplicity, who does not presume to ask God the reason of His commands, who strives with the help of His grace to practice faithfully all the virtues and duties of his state, who accepts with resignation, that they may be meritorious, trial and sorrow, who is satisfied with his station, who would not cause others suffering but rather please and help them, he knows true liberty and peace of heart – he is a child of God, free as the Father Whom he has in Heaven.

Secret Way of the Enclosed Garden – CXXVII

What a different thing is the freedom and happiness of the child of God, of the soul in a state of grace, of the faithful and obedient servant!

True liberty is the service of God in love; a clear calm view of eternal things, the detachment of the heart from creatures; it is to be freed supernaturally and utterly from the bonds of time, of material needs and human obstacles.

Then when the sirens call is and would entice us to liberty, incite us to break the eternal precepts of Order, Right and Virtue, by withdrawing us from the sovereign authority of God, the soul will rise up in its dignity and its pride and with indignant tone return to these dreamers of easy, fictitious and deceptive liberty, the great answer of the Apostles and Martyrs: ‘Non possumus, we cannot.  It is better to obey God rather than man,’ or more gently, with the royal prophet, the soul whispers to the Master of its will: ‘For better is one day in Thy courts above thousands…in the tabernacles of sinners.’

6. It is the means of acquiring the true liberty of the Children of God.

This devotion makes us truly free with the liberty of the children of God.’

Liberty in the literal sense of the word is a right which allows man to do what he will.  But let us note at once that liberty is not independence.  S. Paul lifts up his voice vigorously against such as would claim this.  He says to himself: ‘All things are lawful to me, but all things are not expedient; all things are lawful to me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.’

Human liberty is relative.  It is within certain limits and exercised according to conscience, the divine and human law, and is subject to the established order of things.  It must follow the principles of eternal reason included in the dictates of the human conscience and in the divine principles contained in the Gospel and the Decalogue, taught by the Church.  This sovereign law is opposed to liberty independent of all dogma and all morality that it may lay down for it what is good and what is evil.  It is then within these impassable limits of submission to order, that we can and must act and our liberty evolve and be developed.

If it transgresses these laws, if it turns aside from true reasonableness, if it crosses these limits, there follow disaster, abuses, sin, slavery.  We think to free ourselves from a humiliating and embarrassing constraint, and we do not perceive that we are submitting ourselves to a degrading and bitter servitude.  Man is only great and noble on his knees before God, under the easy yoke of His law and in obedience to His will.  Everywhere else and always, man is the slave of someone or something.

In the human conscience, on the Tables of the Mosaic Law, in our Lord’s Gospel of the new Law, the rights of God to command are written.  But desirous of liberty, Adam emancipates himself, the Jews put the divine Lawgiver to death, these distant ancestors of the French Revolution inscribe at the head of the new Code, the Rights of Man.  Do we think they gained true liberty, the source and pledge of the future bliss we dream of?  No, they subjected themselves to every kind of slavery: that of suffering without consolation, work without an aim, physical and moral distresses, death without the hope of a death which should make all good; that of the curse of Heaven, the blindness of the mind, the hardness of the heart; that of social revolution, unjust and homicidal strikes, of blood…

In the world, man resists the divine law.  He denies to God and His representatives the right of having a word to say in the government of the nations and the obedience which they owe to the Sovereign Governor of the worlds.  Then as they no longer desire a God, it is but logical that they should no longer desire masters, for a master is a vestige of authority, and they have done with authority.  Such a nation has the leaders and the masters that it deserves, effeminate tyrants, incapable and therefore dangerous.

Man is unwilling to serve God in the love and holy liberty of the child.  Such a one becomes the slave tormented by every bad passion, by every untrammeled ambition, degrading vice, the thrall of sin, of error, of every sort of compromise, in short, of the devil…
