St. Louis de Montfort warns…

“There are at this time, more than ever, false devotions to our Blessed Lady which it is easy to mistake for true ones. The devil, like a counterfeiter and a subtle and experienced deceiver, has already deceived and destroyed so many souls by a false devotion to the Blessed Virgin, that he makes a daily use of his diabolical experience to plunge many others by this same way into everlasting perdition.

“As a counterfeiter does not ordinarily counterfeit anything but gold and silver, or very rarely the other metals, because they are not worth the trouble, so the evil spirit does not for the most part counterfeit the other devotions, but only those to Jesus and Mary, the devotion to Holy Communion, and to our Blessed Lady, because they are, among other devotions, what gold and silver are amongst metals” (“True Devotion to Mary”, #90).

Our Lady and Holy Mass


Montfort Father J.M. Huppers has written a wonderful little book called “The Holy Mass in Union with Our Lady”. Here is his explanatory Foreword.


Just as this most holy Body of Jesus was given to us through Mary, so it must be offered through Her hands; and we must receive through Her hands in the Sacrament what was supplied to us by Her and was born from Her most very chaste Womb. (St. Bonaventure)

In this little booklet we present to the reader some thoughts on the role and cooperation of the Most Holy Mother of Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, as well as some indications to recognize practically and make use of this collaboration of Our Lady.

This little work can serve as spiritual reading. It can also be used for meditation, to examine more thoroughly and assimilate more the considerations and exercises which are proposed in it.

Nothing prevents us from even making use of it during the Holy Sacrifice itself, especially on the days when it is granted to us to be present at more than one Holy Mass.

In this way we shall imbue ourselves us little by little with these thoughts and with other similar ones “which the Holy Spirit will supply us” if we are very interior, mortified and faithful to the great and solid devotion which Montfort taught us. They will spontaneously return to us in spirit in our participation in the august Sacrifice. And this will be to the great benefit of God, the Most Blessed Virgin, souls, and ourselves.

It goes without saying that we do not want to impose on anyone these considerations and practices, which, verbally proposed, were already able to be of great help for many persons. They are intended for the “children and slaves of love” of the Most Blessed Virgin, who, according to the pressing recommendation of the divine Heart of Jesus to His favorite confidante, Margaret-Mary, feel an imperative need to unite themselves with their “dear Everything with Jesus” in their holiest actions and above all in the Sacrifice of our altars. Let each, besides, chose according to his attractions from the diverse practices proposed. Since we do not lose sight here of the Most Holy Mother of Jesus, we can justly refer to the “beautiful freedom of the children of God.”

St. Louis de Montfort says we should “do all our actions by Mary, with Mary, in Mary, and for Mary; so that we may do them all the more perfectly by Jesus, with Jesus, in Jesus, and for Jesus” (“True Devotion to Mary”, #257).

Fair enough. Can’t disagree with that.

Yet, while he explains how to do all our actions by, with, and for Mary, he says almost nothing about how to do your actions ‘in Mary.’ See for yourself in #s 261-264 of his “True Devotion to Mary”, where he briefly talks about living ‘in Mary.’ And living ‘in Mary’ is the most important part!

This free ebook, “Life in and for Mary”, fills in this gap. It was written by Ven. Michael of St. Augustine.

What’s interesting is St. Louis says he “read nearly all the books which profess to treat of devotion to Our Lady” (#118). Yet, there’s no evidence he ever read this, although it was available during his lifetime.

It’s also important to remember what Montfort Fr. Armand Plessis says in the Introduction of his “Commentary on the Treatise on the True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin”:

“Now, the “Treatise on the True Devotion” condenses in one small volume a considerable sum of dogmatic truths and spiritual counsels. Several times, the author (St. Louis) shows his intention of only saying things briefly, and he avoids lingering over proofs. Benedict XV himself notes this character: “If the book is of great authority and great unction, it is also “little by volume”.

“Doctrinal density, included in a brief text! The same conciseness naturally calls for explanations. Otherwise many readers will be confused, and will declare themselves incapable of enjoying the Montfortian spirituality.”

St. Louis wrote the “True Devotion to Mary” on the fly. In one sitting, in fact.

So you can see how important it is to have help in understanding it.

And St. Louis de Montfort even admits he left a lot out…

“I have now said many things about the most holy Virgin; but I have many more to say, and there are infinitely more which I shall omit, whether from ignorance, inability, or want of time, in the  design which I have to form a true client of Mary, and a true disciple of Jesus Christ” (#111).

Secret Way of the Enclosed Garden – LXXXIII

13. Because Mary, by means of grace, helps us to bear crosses.

Blessed de Montfort here resumes a thought which he has developed at length in his Treatise of the True Devotion.

There are those who might believe that perfect devotion to the Blessed Virgin is an absolute preservative against all affliction, a sort of spiritual panacea to make us immune forever against all suffering, to make the Christian life easy and salvation infallible.  Yes, but we must be clear about it.  It is not quite that.  ‘It is not that he who by true devotion has found Mary is to be exempt from crosses and sufferings.’  It would be a grave error and a dangerous illusion to think so.  Let us remember that in this devotion we are at the school of Jesus, and the Jesus, with the choice between joy and shame, preferred and endured the Cross.  ‘We must not then,’ says Père Lhoumeau, ‘in spite of the facilities which this devotion gives us, we must not dream of it as a way free from labor and suffering.’

Far from it,’ says Blessed de Montfort on the contrary, ‘he suffers more attacks than others because Mary the Mother of the living gives to all her children fragments of the Tree of love which is the Cross of Jesus.’  And Montfort is himself a striking example of this virile training which Mary, the strong woman, gives her children, and of the love of Jesus crucified with which she inspires them.

God never loved anyone more than His Son and Mary, and yet no one more than they was so tried.  ‘Ought not Christ to have suffered these things and so to enter into His glory?’  And His Mother followed Him bravely along this royal road of tribulation.  And those who profess to follow Jesus and Mary must walk in their footsteps, bear their cross and expect to be, as they were, scourged with affliction.

But,’ and this should reassure them, ‘when she fashions their crosses, Mary gives the grace to bear them patiently and even joyously.’

The crosses she sends them are very different in proportion, hard to the body, painful to the heart, humiliating to the will, to test their love and their fidelity, to harden them and accustom them to greater struggles.  But Mary is a wise Mother, prudent, careful.  She never sends trials beyond the strength of any soul, so as not to provoke weariness, satiety, discouragement.  It sometimes she does, it is that, on the one hand, she knows the courage of those brave souls, and that on the other, she always secures for them graces capable of sustaining them and leading them to triumph.

Mary knows how to train.  She always acts with discretion and feeling.  She does not burden shoulders with a weight heavier than they can bear.  She does not make a point of wearing out our patience, of exasperating our will by trials too long or too special, especially when the souls in question are weak or beginners in the spiritual life.  She measures, tempers, softens.

But when she meets a soul of a vigorous stamp and of superior moral strength, then she sets to work to fashion in that soul a perfect image of the divine model.  Then she hammers, crushes, molds, fuses the clay, the gold.  She casts it in her mold, in herself, and there comes forth a giant of holiness by her means, Blessed de Montfort.
